Return of the Roaring 20s

Roaring 20s

With glittering gold, beading and tassels gracing the Spring 2012 runways, one thing is clear: designers everywhere are preparing for the Great Gatsby.

Gucci unveiled its 2012 Spring/Summer Collection featuring a contemporary twist on the roaring 20s with a mix of modern rock-chic and vintage glamour.

Gucci Creative Director, Frida Giannini, was inspired by the opulence and glamour of the “era of hedonism”, and we simply love the luxury and elegance of the designs!

FireHosiery adores the 1920s era, as this was the time when elaborate pantyhose and stockings with geometric designs, fishnets and back seam tights reached the height of fashion. So, naturally, these types of hosiery work beautifully with the latest runway interpretations of the roaring 20’s trend.

With our admiration of the age of opulence, we’ve put together a few hot hosiery suggestions below that definitely scream “la more” for the 1920’s!

Above: our soft pastel coloured Clara tights are the perfect accompaniment to this sequined and beaded Gucci dress, as they will pick up the cream tones through the body of the dress and contrast beautifully against the strong blacks and golds.

Below: this metallic statement dress by Gucci could be worn with our black micronet tights for an edgy modern twist on the 1920s genre:

…And of course no flapper dress could possibly be complete without a pair of our classic Vintage Seam tights:

What are some of your favourite 1920s looks and what hosiery do you like to wear them with?

Feathers, flappers and fishnets: the Sydney Gangsters Ball

Gangsters Ball

We recently attended the Gangsters Ball at the Metro Theatre in Sydney where we had been invited to have our very own FireHosiery stall.  Being a huge admirer of all things vintage, swing and burlesque, I jumped at this opportunity, and I am so pleased that I did as it turned out to be an absolutely wonderful and fun-filled night!

Keeping in with the theme of the evening, we brought along some of our vintage inspired pantyhose to showcase at our stall, including Vintage Seam, Viola, Chantilly, Deco Flora and Divine.

In deciding what to wear, I went for a burlesque-inspired look teaming up our Viola tights with a black corset (see photo below). Izhar looked dapper with his red bow tie and black braces!

Absolutely everyone had their dancing shoes on (quite literally – there was barely a stiletto in sight!), and it was just wonderful to see so many people having such a fantastic time as they danced the night away to all of the classic favourites.

Our view of all the swing dancing action!

There were some amazing outfits on the night: 1920’s tassel dresses with flapper headbands, 1950s full skirts and retro dresses, as well as many elaborate corsets, silk gloves and feather boas.

Fishnets

I was so impressed to see that there was not a bare leg in sight! Back seam tights were absolutely EVERYWHERE, and there were also a lot of fishnets, micro-fishnets and other patterned tights.

The FireHosiery stall was a huge hit with all of the hosiery-loving ladies, and we received really positive feedback from everyone we met on the night!

A brief history of hosiery

Millions of pairs of pantyhose and stockings are worn by women around the world each day, but have you ever wondered where hosiery actually came from and how long women have been wearing it for? We decided to do a little background research on the topic and discovered some pretty interesting facts…

The early days

The earliest references to hosiery date back to the Ancient Greeks where they were worn by male labourers and slaves. Interestingly, hosiery was mainly worn only by men up until the sixteenth century!

The first knitting machine

The first knitting machine was created in 1589 by William Lee, an English clergyman. It is said that he developed the machine because a woman whom he was courting at the time showed more interest in knitting than in him!

The nylon revolution!

In the late 1920s, researchers at Du Pont Corporation began studies to find an alternative to silk stockings and the nylon stocking was born. “Nylons” as they were popularly called, came to replace silk stockings by the early 1940s.

Wartime shortages

During World War II, nylon and silk became scarce and production of stockings was halted. Many women resorted to staining their legs with tea bags and drawing faux seams down the back of their legs using eyebrow pencil to give the illusion of hosiery. There are even reports that a nylon black market was formed! (Check out FireHosiery’s Vintage Seam tights which are inspired by this era!)

The swinging 60’s

Spandex was first put into hosiery in the early 1960s and this changed hosiery forever. With the ability to be stretched to twice its length, the introduction of spandex meant that pantyhose could now stay up on their own. This coincided with the rise of the mini-skirt during the 1960′s, when many women began to wear full brief pantyhose instead of suspender stockings.

The future…

At FireHosiery, we’re very excited about the future of hosiery in Australia, as we make our mark by bringing beautiful and unique hosiery, stockings and tights to your fingertips!

A sizzling hot launch for FireHosiery

Last Friday we celebrated the official launch of FireHosiery at the Tap Art Gallery in Darlinghurst.

The event was attended by over 300 guests from media, fashion, beauty, law, healthcare and a range of other industries, as well as notable members from the Sydney burlesque and vintage communities. The turnout was greater than we had anticipated and it was so wonderful to see such a large group of people excited about hosiery!

Upon arrival, our guests mingled whilst enjoying wine and canapés, before being led through a velvet curtain to watch the beautiful Briana Bluebell open the evening with a burlesque performance to Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep.” Briana looked absolutely breathtaking in her red and black costume, worn with FireHosiery’s elegant Chantilly tights and hand-made mary jane pumps by Shoes of Prey.

The FireHosiery catwalk show followed immediately after, with models, Annabel, Jemma, Esther and Cameron burning up the catwalk in our hosiery. The catwalk show was styled and managed by Maura McGuirk of Style Magpie, who created a series of ‘stories’ or themes based around our collection ranging from four seasons to polished corporate to simply sexy, and finally through to burlesque and theatrical.

Maura was assisted by a talented team of make-up artists, Leah Schuster and Hilary Ho, and hair stylists, Michael Johnson and Christian Liersch.

We are proud to say that all shoes showcased on the catwalk were hand made by Shoes of Prey: because beautiful hosiery must be worn with beautiful shoes!

The lovely Lauren LaRouge brought a fun and fiery finale to the night’s entertainment with her balloon bursting routine to “Heard it through the Grapevine” by Gladys Knight and the Pips and “Tutti Fruitti”. Lauren looked simply lavishing her purple, green and red costume, accompanied our Viola tights and a pair of custom made black patent pumps with violet horsehair detail by Shoes of Prey.

DJ Stuart Ridley kept the crowd buzzing the whole night to a great mixture of electro swing beats. Stuart will be putting together a compilation of the tracks soon, and we will post a link on our facebook page for those who would like a copy.

After some more mingling, wine, canapés and photos, the event came to a close and all guests (including even the men!) were super anxious to get their hands on one of our prized gift bags containing a complimentary pair of hosiery from our launch collection, as well as vouchers for the Pole Dance AcademyShoes of PreyFranck Provost and more…

Many of the guests continued on afterwards at LO-FI where the manager, Ben Johnson, had concocted a themed fiery cocktail for guests from our launch event.

All in all it was a wonderful night and we would like to thank everyone who helped bring it together, in particular, Ali, Annelisa, Clare, Shiki, Tom and Rory from 5th Base Productions who coordinated photography, videography and lighting, as well as the overall management of the event.

Thanks also to everyone who came along and supported us – we hope you had a blast!
