How to Wear Shorts with Hosiery

It’s that time of year when all your favourite warm weather wardrobe pieces can start to come safely out of hibernation. Until the hottest months hit, however, the ups and downs of Aussie weather remain unpredictable. But there’s no need to keep recycling winter looks; bring out your favourite shorts, and make them unpredictable-proof with the help of some carefully chosen hosiery!

Leather shorts are also very on trend, and will look great against the soft, delicately patterned hosiery in your wardrobe. Alternatively, pair these darker kinds of shorts with a geometric pair of tights for a really modern and classy look.

Trend: Florals!

Florals have hit the European runways with a vengeance. Milan was recently overrun with floral prints, making it trendier than ever to add some flower power to your look.

[Dolce and Gabbana]

Floral on floral looks were spotted everywhere at New York Fashion Week, from Proenza Schouler to Rodarte and even the usually more demurely coloured Thakoon. And in a standout show in Milan, Dolce and Gabbana offered a collection dominated by a folksy take on floral patterns and applique.

We’ve got some great floral inspired hosiery which can help add a hint of this budding trend to your look. Add a touch of delicate romance to your spring wardrobe with our Chantilly tights, which also suggest a lace-like finish, incorporating another vibrant current trend.

Our Ophelia tights have a similarly delicate feel to these great Dolce and Gabbana knee-highs pictured above, and incorporate a vintage inspired look, which will complement a pastel-coloured floral fabric beautifully. For a more colourful addition, our Viola tights will add a burst of purple complementing the popular citrus colours on trend for a bright and fun look.

Or for a more subtle touch of floral, try replicating the runway look above by pairing pretty pumps with some gorgeous floral ankle socks. Our newly released Sweetheart ankle socks are perfect for this look.

Don’t be afraid of head to toe floral: air our floral tights with floral spring dresses for a super trendy finish. Match floral outfits with neutrals or choose a block colour for all your accessories, to make sure finishing details stand out strong.

How will you embrace the flower mania this spring season?

Trend: Incorporating Lace!

Lace is back in a big way. The runways in New York’s fall fashion shows have been dominated by luxurious accents, such as fur, embroidery and, of course, lace.

Runways are still going retro, with a great blend of florals, lace and tweed. It’s ultra feminine and fun, and can be used to great effect by contrasting with the more masculine inspired elements from the recent runways, such as military inspired details or oxford shoes. Preppy details will work wonderfully against lace accents (See our guide for how to add prep to your look!). Or, pair off lace pieces with soft pastels for a very on trend look!

If too much lace makes you feel a little too much like your grandmother, mix in a little bit of lace luxury with a selection of lace-inspired hosiery. Our Chantilly (pictured below) tights feature a beautiful and delicate floral lace design, for a signature look which incorporates this trend without the need to invest in whole new outfits featuring lace.

You can give your look the trendy edge in a flexible and easy to use way. Pair our Chantilly tights with leather details to give your look edge, and channel Taylor Momsen’s look above!

You can use lace to help transition between confusing spring weather, by taking a flowing summer dress and pairing it with soft lace inspired tights (such as our Bella tights pictured below, for just a hint of lace). Finish with some bold flats and intricate jewellery for a soft summery look, which still incorporates some of the warmth and comfort from the cooler months.

Lace details will help break up block coloured looks and add some personality and femininity to the overall effect, or give your edgy look more romance. Rock chicks alike can add texture to masculine details by adding some signature lace stockings.

Corporate Creativity: Hosiery in the Workplace

Dressing for the office has become something of an art. The office environment can appear to encourage dour pant suits and monotone colour palettes, but increasingly women are exploring their corporate fashion possibilities and embracing more of the imagination in their corporate wear.

Brands such as Chloe, Bottega Veneta and Michael Kors have begun to include pieces which can seamlessly form part of the office scene. What you choose to wear to the office can say a lot about you as a person, and make a huge difference not only to the impression you send out, but also how you represent the company you work for!

(Image: Marie Claire)

Fortunately, there is a more affordable and simple way to spice up your office attire: incorporate a killer pair of tights! Make an impression by keeping shapes classic, and adding unique and interesting details. Our Mia tights for instance can be added beneath a classic pencil skirt to give your look that subtle edge, featuring a subtle polka-dot pattern. They’ll look great against a burst of white incorporated into your outfit.

Don’t be afraid of colour; though some research suggests that too bold a colour can appear confrontational, choosing a burgundy tone, like our Lexi tights, instead of a bright red or a deep sea green (like our Envy tights) can give your look a colourful touch without appearing loud or eccentric. Our Envy tights also incorporate a subtle geometric finish to add texture to your look.

Plain black or neutral stockings have traditionally represented standard wear for the office, but you can always take a new approach to these classics by substituting a different dark colour for black (like our Chameleon tights in Mulberry or Dark Green) or choosing tights which feature an eye catching pattern. Our Chantilly and Imbroglio tights add interest and fun to an outfit, allowing you to flaunt your style and personality in a sophisticated way. Pair these with block colour to make the most of the leg lengthening illusion they create!

(Image: FireHosiery HQ – wearing bold patterned tights with a classic outfit)

And for a fun take on the traditional nude stocking, our Clara tights feature flattering vertical lines in a soft fawn colour, which is also perfect as the weather warms up. Viva also comes in both Ivory and Black, and features a distinct geometric pattern which will also come in handy for spring.

Picking a nicely tailored finishing piece like a great blazer or jacket can help ensure your office look remains appropriate and presentable. As we approach spring, look for lighter, flowing fabrics and don’t be afraid to finish your look with a pair of strappy, more breathable shoes (see our post How to: Wear Hosiery With Open Shoes for some style suggestions!).

Make a day at the office that little bit more fun with some fun accessory pieces. How will you incorporate a bit of your personality into the office?

How To: Wear Hosiery with Open Shoes

(Image: Styleite.com)

To peep toe or not to peep toe? It seems like style aficionados simply can never decide whether wearing hosiery with open toed shoes is fashion brilliance or faux pas.

However, here at FireHosiery HQ, we’re obviously mad about hosiery, which means we’re always up for fun new ways to wear tights! And why not attempt the peep toe and tights look? There are a few ways you can try it without rocking the fashion boat.

For instance, the best way to avoid unnecessary contrast is to make sure you don’t go for a reinforced toe. Start with a thicker strapped shoe as well, which will expose less of your foot and give you a good place to start experimenting with hosiery and shoe combinations. It can also help with any potential slipping and sliding of the foot!

(Image: Glamour.com)

One way to get into this budding trend is to minimise contrast between shoes and hosiery, which makes the look much easier to pull off. Our Milano or Envy tights come in great variety of colours, making it simply up to you to pick the best colour combination to offset your shoe of choice. Pair black shoes with black tights, or try to match colours as closely as possible if you’d like the subtler overall look.

(Image: Fashion Me Fabulous)

Of course, plenty of runway collections have done exactly the opposite as well: making the contrast more extreme can create a fun and fashion forward detail in your overall look as well. It’s a daring look, but the risk can definitely be worthwhile!

If the idea of a fully covered leg with peep toes is too intimidating, you can start with just a pair of socks, like our new Paige range of socks, which can be paired with jeans or slacks to create a tasteful overall look. And if the whole idea is way out of your style comfort zone, then our Aztec footless tights can be a nice compromise, allowing you to expose your foot and wear a great pair of tights at once.

Some socks and tights are way too exciting to hide behind a closed shoe! It’s a great way to add some more bursts of colour to an outfit too (think of our Lexi tights or Chameleon range in particular!), and as long as you’re staying true to your style you can avoid any potential faux pas.

Socks and sandals took over the runways in the recent past, and in our opinion, that definitely means it’s time to have fun pairing up your favourite open shoes with some exciting tights!

Trend: Luxury Prep

The American preppy look continues to inspire designers. From Gap to Jil Sander, prep continues to be given new life; varsity jackets and luxurious detailing have turned the potential for student shabby into serious chic. This look endures owing to its deference to the classics – a well-cut item of clothing never really goes out of style and, of course, looks great on everyone. Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger have made their name owing precisely on this principle; classic tailoring and streamlined chic is timeless.

Here at FireHosiery, we’re excited to have just released our first range of socks that pay tribute to this trend. Whilst the weather is still cool, knee-highs can add a little extra warmth with a skirt, and can even be layered on top of simple full leg stockings. Our Paige socks come in burgundy and black, and feature a little of the luxe detailing we’ve been seeing on the runway.

Forget your high school sports socks; Paige features delicate cutaway detailing, adding sophistication and comfort for a more grown up take on this trend.  Keep your eye out as well for our Milano range, which will feature more textured knee-highs in some great new colours for you to choose from!

Our Paige tights in Burgundy complement a plaid skirt or jumper perfectly, carrying through the college spirit to the top half of your look.  Pair them off with a pair of dark brogues or even let them poke out from a pair of mid-calf to knee-high boots. Polo shirts, tailored Capri pants or chinos and pleats can all add to your look, as well as classic pieces like the trench coat or oxford shoe. Finish with a well-cut blazer and classic accessories, like a streamlined handbag and simple jewellery.

Keeping the overall details tailored and clean will add a sense of preppiness simply and with sophistication.

How will you indulge in some school nostalgia?

Celebrity Style: Katy Perry

After a year of rollercoaster relationship woes, there’s one thing that’s certainly remained steady about Katy Perry: her eye-catching sense of style! The pop princess has always displayed a flair for colour, taking fashion to the extreme with bold fabric choices and a great sense of humour. Her looks are known to cite everything from cartoon characters to classic sophisticated sirens, making her style continuously exciting. She knows how to make a lasting impression with a daring ensemble!

She’s also never one to shy away from a statement pair of stockings. Our Deco Flora and Divine tights pay tribute to just that kind of fashion courage. These tights are attention seekers, and can be paired with simple sweater dresses or even more lavish floral printed designs. Katy might pair the Divine tights with a fitted dress in an eye-catching geometric print and some knee high boots.

Of course, our recently released Chameleon range also feature the kind of bright colours Katy would be proud of! Be fearless in fuchsia or lilac, and while you don’t have to copy Katy – who often gets the hair colour to match! – you can use these tights to add a touch of her fun loving fashion spirit to an otherwise demurely coloured look. Katy here wears some bright tights with a pale grey cardigan and printed dress, finishing with black shoes and accessories.

Keep your eye out also for some great new embellished tights, which can add some rock chick excitement to your wardrobe.  They’ll feature studded metallic detailing, channeling some of the Katy Perry rebel spirit that we love!

Whether it’s an unusual detail, a splash of colour or a quirky accessory, you too can try out some Katy Perry magic in your day-to-day look.

How will you incorporate this pop queen’s persona into your wardrobe?

Trend: Pop Colour

Some of the biggest names in fashion have been eagerly reintroducing colour for some time now. Bright, bold colours have been making a huge comeback, and this continues well into spring. Nowhere is this more obvious than on red carpets around the world at the moment. Pairing bold lips with statement colour popping accessories adds a bright touch to your wardrobe, and demonstrates a simple and effective way to spice up your style and stay on trend.

Marion Cotillard, for instance, at London’s The Dark Knight Rises premier takes up this trend perfectly: she’s added excitement to an otherwise simple silhouette by choosing a lip colour, heels and purse in solid crimson.

Fun makeup choices can really bring out the boldness in your tights as well. Brown eyed gals can make eyes pop with shades of green and blue around the eyes, and blue or green eyed girls can add spice with pinks, blues and silver.

Following this pop colour trend, FireHosiery has just released the ‘Chameleon’ range of coloured tights in a selection of fun and fabulous shades including turquoise, fuchsia, lilac and tangerine. Complement these fun colourful tights with a lip colour or eyeliner in the same colour, and finish with a belt detail, purse or earrings in the same colour.

Make the rest of your outfit simple and sleek with shades of grey, blue or black, or go for the more adventurous option and pick a contrasting colour! Other popular and eye catching combinations include red with green tights, navy with pink or orange, or even purples and golden hues with bright turquoise tights.

There are lots of combinations which work, just make sure to keep accessories or makeup accents consistent. For a simpler take on this trend, just stick to a lip colour or eyeliner in the same colour as your stockings, or pick an appropriately matching nail polish. By selecting just one of these to complement your tights, you can still achieve a very sophisticated look which can be just as effective as incorporating colour from head to toe.

Are you embracing colour bursts? We hope these tips and ideas inspire you to add some fun details to your wardrobe!

How to Wear Eccentric Tights

Patterns may at first seem a little tricky to style from day to day. But there’s good news for all of you who love an eye catching pattern: bold and even contrasting patterns are now more in than ever. Mixing patterns which might even appear to ‘clash’ is also making the runway rounds around the world.

Prints Clash

Though the big names are now taking up bold patterns with pizzazz, the over the top and eccentric has always been a huge factor for one group in particular. Harajuku in Tokyo has long represented the epitome of eccentric streetwear. These Japanese guys and girls are fearless in their use of contrasting colours and shapes, layering seemingly impossible combinations and taking daring fashion risks.

Incorporating a bit of the Harajuku spirit is easy, and you don’t have to go so far as to dye your hair ten colours or buy up on tutus! Take our Viola tights; they’re super comfortable and incorporate a subtle purple floral against black netting. These tights are certainly show stoppers, and though you might hesitate to pair them with anything too outrageous, they can be easily matched with lace dresses, or purple dominated patterns. The key to creating good pattern clash is to select colour wisely, and carry through certain colour accents in order to create a holistic look. Though Harajuku girls fearlessly combine textures, patterns and styles, you can pick up on aspects of Harajuku fashion to channel your inner eccentric into your current wardrobe.

Our Geo Art tights will show up wonderfully against stripes in all directions, or any other kind of geometric prints. Being in black, they can also more easily complement brighter coloured prints. Picking black patterned tights makes pattern matching simpler! In this vein, our Chantilly tights feature delicate floral and lace accents, making them fun to pair with floral patterns. A final, simple method to pair up patterns starts with our Viva tights in Ivory; in this pale tone, pastel coloured patterns of all kinds can be mixed to create a softer look, which still features some of the daring Harajuku fashion choices! It’s very chic to pair florals with softly coloured striped prints, and this all works perfectly with our Viva tights as well.

Be fearless when mixing prints; keeping shapes or colours consistent leaves plenty of room to mix and match, across the whole spectrum of possible patterns. Will you take the plunge and pair up more eccentric shapes and styles? Your fashion risks may well pay off!

Sporty Chic: Embracing souped-up gym wear

Olympic mania has been seeping in to all things lately, and fashion is no exception! Though not everyone can don their national colours and represent in London 2012, you can certainly channel the trendy sporting vibe with ease.

Hoodies and racer-back singlets, mesh and tracksuits have all been re-imagined by names such as Alexander Wang, Calvin Klein and Isabel Marant in recent runway collections. Stella McCartney has collaborated with Adidas, the major Olympic sponsor, and is responsible for the British Olympic team’s uniform.

Combining fashion forward prints into traditionally sportswear related shapes and silhouettes has meant that the gym and the runway are more in sync than ever. Dressing for the gym has also well and truly permeated street wear, incorporating sportswear fabrics and shapes into day to day dressing. Fluro accents, plasticised trimmings and waterproof outerwear have all found their way into casual brand names.

This trend also extends to hosiery. Legwarmers and skin tight leggings feature heavily across runway collections, and here at FireHosiery HQ, we’re responding to this trend by giving new life to legwarmers. Our new collection is being released just in time for the games, and includes legwarmers, footless tights and a variety of new patterns which reflect fashion’s sporting mood.

Above: Grace Legwarmers in Light Grey

Above: Aztec Footless Tights

Legwarmers are fun and flexible to wear, giving that comfortable sports vibe whilst also making a fashion statement. Wear them under your favourite boots, or over a pair of patterned or plain tights (such as our footless Aztec tights). We’re releasing them in charcoal, light grey and black, making them easy to be worn with all sorts of skirts. If you want less of a sporty look but still want to use these finishing touches, wear legwarmers with tights and a sweater dress or oversized jumper, and finish with a pair of classic heels.

You can also more subtly reference the legwarmer look over tights with our new Melita footless tights; they reference this fashion in one streamlined accessory, making it easy and comfortable to achieve a gym inspired look without any fuss. The sports inspired look is all about blending the comfort and ease of exercise wear with your day to day style – it’s the perfect marriage of sleek modern minimalism and functionality!
