Hosiery, Hats and Horses– Part #1

Sunday, March 4, 2012 9:15:08 PM Australia/Sydney

In preparation for Autumn Racing Carnival 2012, we have partnered with renowned milliner, Elizabeth Deane, of Genie of Hats who is designing and creating a series of exquisite head pieces to be worn with our hosiery.

I recently visited Elizabeth at her workshop in Newtown, and I must say I felt as though I’d walked straight into the mad hatter’s tea party in this enchanted world of feathers, flowers and fabulous hats!

Hats fill up just about every corner of the workshop!

In between all the serious Autumn Carnival talk, I had a bit of fun playing dress ups with some of Elizabeth’s gorgeous hats:

Elizabeth gave me a sneak preview of the 4 hat concepts that she is working on for our Autumn Carnival collaboration. Below are some short video clips where she explains her inspiration behind each of the designs:

Look #1: “Angelina” - 1940’s inspired dark grey toque

The first look is a 1940s inspired dark grey wide brimmed toque hat which will feature a soft pink feathered flower surrounded by grey felt leaves. This hat will be worn with our Milano Tights.

Look #2: “Autumn Leaf Falling in Central Park”

The second look is a striking sculptural headpiece in houndstooth fabric, which will sit on a black satin base. This hat will be worn with our Geo Art Tights, and is destined to be a Derby Day sensation!

Look #3: “Cherub” Cloche

Elizabeth is creating a very soft, angelic and feminine cloche hat using an array of silk and lace fabrics in burgundy and dark plum hues. This design was inspired by our Deco Flora Tights (Dark Plum).

Look #4: Elizabethan-inspired Cloche

Elizabeth is working on a red felt cloche hat featuring a black felt collar-like adornment, giving it an Elizabethan feel.  The strong curves and shapes of this hat were designed to complement the pattern of our Imbroglio Tights.

The FireHosiery and Genie of Hats collaborations will be styled and put forth as entries for some of the key Fashion on the Field competitions of the Autumn Carnival 2012.

This is the first part of a running blog documenting our progress in the lead up to the Autumn Carnival - so be sure to stay tuned and follow this exciting journey over the coming weeks!

How To Store Your Tights

Friday, January 6, 2012 11:29:20 AM Australia/Sydney

As my hosiery collection continues to rapidly expand, I often wonder whether there's perhaps a better way to organise and store all of my tights.

Currently, I’m in the habit of wrapping my tights and stockings back around their original card divider and plastic polybag packaging, and then sorting them vaguely in terms of colour/texture/thickness/style in my drawers. Here's a snapshot of what my hosiery drawers look like at the moment:

Katie's hosiery drawers

I find this method is great for fishnet and lace patterned tights, as it allows me to quickly glance and spot which pattern I want to wear. The protection of the plastic polybag is also great for delicate sheers as it helps prevent snagging and catching as I rummage through the drawers.

However, it can be pretty time consuming organising them all in this way, and often my laundry pile sits for weeks as I put off the task of sorting all of my tights out…

So, I decided to a bit of research to find out some other suggested ways of storing tights. Here’s what I’ve found:

1.       Zip lock bags:

Zip lock bags

Another popular way of storing tights is to sort them in zip lock bags, as pictured above. Zip lock bags allow you to store multiples of the same pair, or similar designs, in the one resealable bag, and then organise by colour and thickness.  Plus you can also write a description note on the outside of the bag– this is particularly good for darker lace patterns that might be difficult to otherwise identify.

2.       Accessories organiser:

Accessories organiser

An accessories organiser such as the one pictured above will fit neatly into any wardrobe, saving precious drawer space. You can fit 2-3 pairs in each pocket, and organise by colour and texture.

3.       Coat hanger:

Coat hanger

Tying your tights onto coat hangers, as pictured above, is an attractive and ingenious solution to the tights storage predicament. This works really well for easily identifiable coloured tights, but might not be as useful if your collection is mainly greys and blacks.

Also, I probably wouldn’t recommend this method for delicate sheer tights (anything less than 20 denier), as these may easily catch and snag on other items in your wardrobe.

4.       Drawer divider:

Drawer divider

Drawer dividers, such as the one pictured above, are a fast and easy way to store your tights, and are particularly handy if you’re short on wardrobe space. You can generally fit one pair in each section, allowing you to organise by colour, thickness and pattern.

How do you store your tights and stockings? We’d love to hear some of your suggestions!

What will I wear this Christmas?

Friday, December 23, 2011 12:36:46 PM Australia/Sydney

Tomorrow morning I'm heading to the Hunter Valley to celebrate Christmas with family and friends in the vineyards. I’m just so excited to catch up with everyone and enjoy some fine wines and great food! But of course, the first thing on my mind is what to wear to Christmas lunch…

I’ve decided on this divine red silk crepe asymmetrical drape dress from Gary Bigeni that has been sitting in my wardrobe waiting for the perfect occasion – and what better occasion than Christmas?!

Gary Bigeni dress

The modern look and asymmetrical cut of the dress lends itself perfectly to some of our geometric patterned tights such as Viva (below left) and Imbroglio (below right):

Viva TightsImbroglio Tights

The bold pattern of these tights will look sensational against the red dress, adding texture and pulling the entire look together.

For shoes, I’ll be wearing my favourite black snakeskin wedges that I designed myself at Shoes of Prey (pictured below with our Imbroglio tights):

Black Snakeskin wedges Image: Shoes of Prey

I just love how the wedge shape and snakeskin finish extends the pattern of my tights, which has the much desired effect of elongating the legs!

To complete the look, I'm going to accessorise with a chunky black necklace, such as this one below:

Well, now my look is complete!  What will you wear to Christmas lunch this Sunday?!

Inspiration: Jean Paul Gaultier spring catwalk

Monday, December 12, 2011 2:33:02 PM Australia/Sydney

We were so thrilled to see Jean Paul Gaultier’s spring catwalk which features a stunning array of tattoo-print stockings, as well as jacquard tights with bold lines and splashes of colour.

Unique hosiery accentuates the skin to an entirely new level,” said Gaultier. “Stockings use the skin and natural shape of the body as a canvas to create an allure for the entire outfit, tying the whole look together.”

Naturally, we couldn’t agree more with Gaultier!  Stockings are essential for accentuating your legs and polishing your look.

Here are a few of our favourite looks from the Gaultier collection:

We recently teamed up with Sydney’s most sought after society for women, Champagne for Charity, to organise a fabulous night of fashion, fun and French Champagne, all in the name of charity!

Catwalk for a Cause was held at the Tap Art Gallery, Darlinghurst, and over 100 ladies came along to enjoy some bubbles and watch a showcase of spring/summer fashion featuring a range of local up-and-coming labels including Age of Intimacy, Clover Love, Kunynghame, Sovii, Eyvie and Soot ii Hothersal, as well as shoes by Shoes of Prey, frames by Sneaking Duck, and, of course, legwear by FireHosiery!

Return of the Roaring 20s

Monday, October 17, 2011 1:01:06 PM Australia/Sydney

Roaring 20s

With glittering gold, beading and tassels gracing the Spring 2012 runways, one thing is clear: designers everywhere are preparing for the Great Gatsby.

Gucci unveiled its 2012 Spring/Summer Collection featuring a contemporary twist on the roaring 20s with a mix of modern rock-chic and vintage glamour.

Gucci Creative Director, Frida Giannini, was inspired by the opulence and glamour of the “era of hedonism”, and we simply love the luxury and elegance of the designs!

Gucci SS 12

FireHosiery adores the 1920s era, as this was the time when elaborate pantyhose and stockings with geometric designs, fishnets and back seam tights reached the height of fashion. So, naturally, these types of hosiery work beautifully with the latest runway interpretations of the roaring 20’s trend.

With our admiration of the age of opulence, we’ve put together a few hot hosiery suggestions below that definitely scream “la more” for the 1920’s!

Gucci SS 12clara

Above: our soft pastel coloured Clara tights are the perfect accompaniment to this sequined and beaded Gucci dress, as they will pick up the cream tones through the body of the dress and contrast beautifully against the strong blacks and golds.

Below: this metallic statement dress by Gucci could be worn with our black micronet tights for an edgy modern twist on the 1920s genre:

...And of course no flapper dress could possibly be complete without a pair of our classic Vintage Seam tights:

Spring Racing Carnival 2011

Friday, October 7, 2011 5:52:08 PM Australia/Sydney

The 2011 Spring Racing Carnival is finally here, and is the perfect time to show off your legs and make a statement as you strut your stuff on the field!

Stockings are essential for completing and polishing your race wear outfit, and is a must have if you are entering Fashions on the Field.

Your selection of colour, style and denier should be dictated by the style dress you choose to wear. We’ve predicted some of the key looks for 2011 racing season, and suggested some hosiery combinations below:

Ladylike chic with a vintage twist:

Think dresses and full skirts with elongated hemlines and cinched in waists teamed with pretty blouses and cropped fitted jackets:

full skirt

Louis Vuitton A/W10

To polish this ladylike look, be sure to accessorise with gloves and vintage inspired pantyhose. We recommend Vintage Seam in black or natural:

Vintage seam

Vintage Seam in natural

This look can also work well with classic micronet tights as featured on the Paul Smith A/W10 runway:

Paul Smith

Pleats:

Feminine pleats are predicted to be a huge trend this racing season. Try to opt for fabrics like crepe and silk tulle for a Feminine and floaty look:

Oscar de La Renta, Erdem

Left: Oscar de la Renta SS 11; Right: Erdem SS 11

pleats

Vera Wang, Fall 11

Classic subtle styles like our Clara tights work well with these feminine looks:

Clara

Classic black and white:

Racing season is simply not complete without stylish black and white outfits for Derby Day. Model, Rebecca Twigley, finishes her Derby Day look with classic black micronets tights:

rebecca twigley

We recommend teaming up a simple black and white outfit like this:

black and white

with some statement tights like Geo Art:

geo art

.....or Imbroglio:

Imbroglio

And finally, some tips for looking HOT on the field:

1. Ensure your dress/skirt is an appropriate length i.e. just above or below the knee, and no shorter than mid-thigh.

2. Dress for the daytime not for the nightclub. Avoid wearing anything strapless, sheer, micro mini or super tight.

3. Pay special attention to detail with your shoes, bag and accessories.

4. Dress for the weather. If it’s cold and raining, take a jacket and wear thicker tights.

5. Avoid showing too much skin. It’s okay to show a little cleavage, but make sure you don’t flash miles of leg at the same time.

6. Whatever you do, DO NOT take off your shoes! Try to reduce the risk of sore feet by opting for a lower heel or a wedge heel, and invest in some Party Feet.

Happy racing!!

Feathers, flappers and fishnets: the Sydney Gangsters Ball

Wednesday, September 14, 2011 12:08:02 PM Australia/Sydney

Gangsters Ball

We recently attended the Gangsters Ball at the Metro Theatre in Sydney where we had been invited to have our very own FireHosiery stall.  Being a huge admirer of all things vintage, swing and burlesque, I jumped at this opportunity, and I am so pleased that I did as it turned out to be an absolutely wonderful and fun-filled night!

Keeping in with the theme of the evening, we brought along some of our vintage inspired pantyhose to showcase at our stall, including Vintage Seam, Viola, Chantilly, Deco Flora and Divine.

In deciding what to wear, I went for a burlesque-inspired look teaming up our Viola tights with a black corset (see photo below). Izhar looked dapper with his red bow tie and black braces!

FireHosiery stallKatie in front of the FireHosiery stall

Absolutely everyone had their dancing shoes on (quite literally – there was barely a stiletto in sight!), and it was just wonderful to see so many people having such a fantastic time as they danced the night away to all of the classic favourites.

Dancing

Our view of all the swing dancing action!

There were some amazing outfits on the night: 1920’s tassel dresses with flapper headbands, 1950s full skirts and retro dresses, as well as many elaborate corsets, silk gloves and feather boas.

Fishnets

I was so impressed to see that there was not a bare leg in sight! Back seam tights were absolutely EVERYWHERE, and there were also a lot of fishnets, micro-fishnets and other patterned tights.

The FireHosiery stall was a huge hit with all of the hosiery-loving ladies, and we received really positive feedback from everyone we met on the night!

Spring-spiration!

Tuesday, September 6, 2011 3:38:14 PM Australia/Sydney

Spring is finally here and we are just so excited about some of the gorgeous seasonal looks - from floral prints, 60’s inspired full skirts, crochet, trench dresses, to punk!

The key Spring 2011 looks work beautifully with our launch collection hosiery, providing the perfect excuse to put your pins on parade!

Floral prints

Floral print at DG Summer 2011

Floral prints are always a must have for spring, and this season’s gorgeous vintage floral prints work beautifully with our Viva tights in ivory, for a romantic, feminine look. For darker, moodier floral prints, try teaming them up with Viva in black, as well as Chantilly or Divine.

60s inspired full skirts

60s inspired full skirts at Louis Vuitton A/W 2010

The popularity of Mad Men has sparked a resurgence in early 60s fashion. Full skirts and longer hemlines will be a key look this spring/summer. We recommend our Vintage Seam tights (either in black or natural) to polish this elegant look.

Crochet

Crochet at Gucci, Spring/Summer 2011

Crochet is set to make a strong return this spring, and this look was featured with our Viva tights in ivory on the catwalk at the FireHosiery launch event (see image below).

Viva (ivory) at FireHosiery launch

Trench dresses

Trench dress at DKNY, Spring 2011

Trench dresses are set to be a new favourite for the Monday-Friday working wardrobe. We think the simple and classic trench dress pictured above would look sensational teamed up with the bold angular patterned Imbroglio tights.

Punk

Studded denim shorts at Balmain Spring/Summer 2011

The punk trend is set to carry on from last year and continue to influence what we wear again this spring. In the look featured above, studded denim shorts are worn with torn micro fishnet tights. Check out our Micronet tights in the FireHosiery store.

We hope this provides you with some inspiration for putting your pins on parade this spring!

A brief history of hosiery

Wednesday, August 24, 2011 12:19:15 PM Australia/Sydney

Millions of pairs of pantyhose and stockings are worn by women around the world each day, but have you ever wondered where hosiery actually came from and how long women have been wearing it for? We decided to do a little background research on the topic and discovered some pretty interesting facts...

The early days

The earliest references to hosiery date back to the Ancient Greeks where they were worn by male labourers and slaves. Interestingly, hosiery was mainly worn only by men up until the sixteenth century!

The first knitting machine

The first knitting machine was created in 1589 by William Lee, an English clergyman. It is said that he developed the machine because a woman whom he was courting at the time showed more interest in knitting than in him!

The nylon revolution!

In the late 1920s, researchers at Du Pont Corporation began studies to find an alternative to silk stockings and the nylon stocking was born. “Nylons” as they were popularly called, came to replace silk stockings by the early 1940s.

Wartime shortages

During World War II, nylon and silk became scarce and production of stockings was halted. Many women resorted to staining their legs with tea bags and drawing faux seams down the back of their legs using eyebrow pencil to give the illusion of hosiery. There are even reports that a nylon black market was formed! (Check out FireHosiery's Vintage Seam tights which are inspired by this era!)

The swinging 60’s

Spandex was first put into hosiery in the early 1960s and this changed hosiery forever. With the ability to be stretched to twice its length, the introduction of spandex meant that pantyhose could now stay up on their own. This coincided with the rise of the mini-skirt during the 1960's, when many women began to wear full brief pantyhose instead of suspender stockings.

The future…

At FireHosiery, we're very excited about the future of hosiery in Australia, as we make our mark by bringing beautiful and unique hosiery, stockings and tights to your fingertips!

A sizzling hot launch for FireHosiery

Thursday, August 18, 2011 1:55:15 AM Australia/Sydney

Last Friday we celebrated the official launch of FireHosiery at the Tap Art Gallery in Darlinghurst.

The event was attended by over 300 guests from media, fashion, beauty, law, healthcare and a range of other industries, as well as notable members from the Sydney burlesque and vintage communities. The turnout was greater than we had anticipated and it was so wonderful to see such a large group of people excited about hosiery!

Upon arrival, our guests mingled whilst enjoying wine and canapés, before being led through a velvet curtain to watch the beautiful Briana Bluebell open the evening with a burlesque performance to Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep.” Briana looked absolutely breathtaking in her red and black costume, worn with FireHosiery’s elegant Chantilly tights and hand-made mary jane pumps by Shoes of Prey.

The FireHosiery catwalk show followed immediately after, with models, Annabel, Jemma, Esther and Cameron burning up the catwalk in our hosiery. The catwalk show was styled and managed by Maura McGuirk of Style Magpie, who created a series of ‘stories’ or themes based around our collection ranging from four seasons to polished corporate to simply sexy, and finally through to burlesque and theatrical.

Maura was assisted by a talented team of make-up artists, Leah Schuster and Hilary Ho, and hair stylists, Michael Johnson and Christian Liersch.

We are proud to say that all shoes showcased on the catwalk were hand made by Shoes of Prey: because beautiful hosiery must be worn with beautiful shoes!

The lovely Lauren LaRouge brought a fun and fiery finale to the night’s entertainment with her balloon bursting routine to “Heard it through the Grapevine" by Gladys Knight and the Pips and “Tutti Fruitti”. Lauren looked simply lavishing her purple, green and red costume, accompanied our Viola tights and a pair of custom made black patent pumps with violet horsehair detail by Shoes of Prey.

DJ Stuart Ridley kept the crowd buzzing the whole night to a great mixture of electro swing beats. Stuart will be putting together a compilation of the tracks soon, and we will post a link on our facebook page for those who would like a copy.

After some more mingling, wine, canapés and photos, the event came to a close and all guests (including even the men!) were super anxious to get their hands on one of our prized gift bags containing a complimentary pair of hosiery from our launch collection, as well as vouchers for the Pole Dance AcademyShoes of PreyFranck Provost and more…

Many of the guests continued on afterwards at LO-FI where the manager, Ben Johnson, had concocted a themed fiery cocktail for guests from our launch event.

All in all it was a wonderful night and we would like to thank everyone who helped bring it together, in particular, Ali, Annelisa, Clare, Shiki, Tom and Rory from 5th Base Productions who coordinated photography, videography and lighting, as well as the overall management of the event.

Thanks also to everyone who came along and supported us – we hope you had a blast!

A warm welcome to FireHosiery!

Tuesday, July 26, 2011 1:13:40 PM Australia/Sydney

Welcome to the FireHosiery fashion blog. This is where I will be keeping you updated on the latest legwear trends from around the globe, and sharing my inspiration for FireHosiery’s exciting new designs and styles.

By way of introduction, I am Katie, the founder of FireHosiery. I would like to start by telling you a little bit about myself and my inspiration behind creating FireHosiery.

My passion for hosiery began during my travels throughout Japan and Europe, when I fell in love with all of the beautiful hosiery on offer - from gorgeous patterned fishnets, to intricate jacquard designed sheers. It was so disappointing to come back to the somewhat uninspiring hosiery in our local Australian stores.

My initial solution was to bolster my personal hosiery collection by buying up in bulk whilst overseas, so that I would have enough to see me through until my next overseas trip.  In my previous job as a corporate lawyer, I loved wearing gorgeous patterned hosiery to jazz up a plain business suit, and soon acquired the reputation as “the girl with the hot hosiery".

However, the desire for beautiful, quality hosiery at my fingertips eventually overcame me, and this led to the creation of FireHosiery.

FireHosiery is the first Australian hosiery brand to sell exclusively online. It is my aim to ensure that FireHosiery provides customers with the ultimate online consumer experience, through its user-friendly website and unrivalled customer care.

I hope that you can join me on my journey through fancy fishnets, opulent opaques and stunning sheers, in my bid to bring you beautiful hosiery at the click of a mouse!
